FAQ
Questions people ask before signing up.
If yours is not here, email support@ziptie.in and we will answer it — and probably add it.
The number
- Is it a real mobile number?
- Yes. Ziptie numbers are ordinary +91 mobile numbers, not internet (VoIP) lines. Apps that refuse virtual numbers accept them.
- Will banks and UPI apps send OTPs to it?
- In our testing, yes — because it is a regular mobile number. We still recommend keeping your bank on your real number; Ziptie is for everything else.
- Can I choose the number?
- Not yet. You are issued a number from our pool. Being able to pick a memorable one is on the list.
- Does it work outside India?
- The number is Indian. You can receive on it from anywhere with an internet connection, since everything arrives in the app.
Messages & calls
- How fast do OTPs arrive?
- Typically within about four seconds. The code is pulled out of the message and shown at the top of the app with a copy button.
- How do calls work?
- Calls to your Ziptie number ring inside the app over the internet. Your SIM is never part of the connection, so your real number is never exposed.
- Can I make calls or send texts from it?
- No, by design. Ziptie is receive-only. That is what keeps the numbers clean and accepted, and means you can never accidentally call someone from it.
- What does the block switch do?
- It stops every incoming call. Messages and OTPs keep arriving. You can then allow specific services back in, one by one.
- What is forwarding?
- Per-service forwarding sends that one company's calls to your real phone. Only that company learns your real number, and only while you leave it on.
Replacing a number
- What happens when I replace it?
- A new number is issued straight away and the old one stops working. Your message history stays in the app, and Ziptie shows you the list of places to update.
- Can I get the old number back?
- No. Once burned, a number is retired. Keep that in mind before replacing.
- How do I know who leaked it?
- The 'Where you have used it' screen lists every service that has contacted you and when. When unknown callers start, you can usually see which signup they followed.
The beta
- How do I get in?
- Fill in the interest form on the home page. We invite people in small batches and email you if you are picked.
- What does it cost during the beta?
- Nothing. Your first number is free in exchange for a couple of short feedback check-ins.
- What will it cost after?
- ₹199 per number, one-time. No subscription.
- Where is Ziptie available?
- India only, for now.
